Transport connection within the Ilm district
The whole area of the Ilm district offers a good transport system. The through roads B 4, B 87 and B 88 offer a convenient and fast connection to the freeways A 4 and A 9 as well as to all German and European agglomerations.
The regional capital Erfurt can be reached within short time by car or train. One objective of the federal transport network plan "Verkehrsprojekte Deutsche Einheit" (traffic projects German Unity) is building the freeway A 71 from Erfurt in Thuringia to Schweinfurt in Bavaria. This freeway has already been completed in the area of the Ilm district. Another freeway, the A73, is planned and will ensure a fast connection to South Germany. Being eco-friendly and reliable the railway is of special significance as means of transport to the federal transport network in Thuringia which is also advantageous to the Ilm district. By rail the region is connected directly with all German centres as well as with a couple of European major cities. In Erfurt, a freight village for a rapid turnover of merchandise is under construction. Moreover, the construction of the German Intercity-Express line Erfurt-Nuremberg as part of the Berlin-Leipzig-Munich line goes through the Ilm district. Due to the interregional station nearby Ilmenau, which is mainly used for the long-distance traffic of goods and people, the Ilm district is also connected directly. Additionally, the Erfurt airport, which is still under construction, makes possible connections to the major airports in Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Munich and Nuremberg.
